A candy theme birthday for Em! Now that so many years have gone by it’s always amusing to look back on specific events in appreciation, as well as to see just what you could have done differently. It’s also fascinating doing things for the first time and trying to make them as special as possible. What I like more than anything however, is how the moment while in it was perfect, and the growth developed from it for future events is just as great.

This post is about our 5 year olds (at the time) first friend birthday party. Whats interesting is that this daughter of ours has had zero interest in more friend parties. She for the time being prefers family gatherings for her birthdays, which is just fine as well. Her happiness is what matters.
A Candy Themed Birthday
For this birthday we went with a candy theme. Well, we sorta went with a candy theme. Since the kiddos were so young we didn’t want to inundate them with beautifully curated jars of multicolored candy options. We opted for candy themed decor more or less. We did have a ‘make a candy necklace’ craft, but that was pretty much the extent of the eating candy part.

My husband decided that we might as well just purchase party tables instead of renting them. He figured that we’d subsequently end up needing them for future events, turns out he was right. For the table centerpieces we simply made “suckers” using balloons and PVC piping. The base that they are in is Styrofoam wrapped in wrapping paper.
The bowls on the table are full of candy options for the necklaces. Those bowls, I’m guessing I purchased those from a dollar store, I can’t really remember. However, if you’ve read anything about me on this blog, then you know that I’m pretty frugal overall. The one area where we didn’t mind making a small investment was for her cake. We thought it was super cute and bright! Perfect for our little intellect. I removed the background of this photo so that the cake could be seen better. It cut the top of the 5 off, but I thats fine. The original photo looked a bit too dark.

For the snacks we had kid appropriate treats of course. That was easy, because there were mainly 5 year olds at the party. The snacks were a win of course, goldfish, pretzels, pirates booty puffs, frozen flavored grapes. All fun for the kiddos. The cute containers were either leftover from prior parties or from Hobby Lobby (50% off) or the Dollar Tree. If its not DIY, I’m surely looking for a deal. Chris loved that about me

I kind of wish that I thought that I might one day blog about this birthday. If so, I would like to think that my photos would have been much more crisp. Either way, I’m glad to write about it now. It was one of many great memories and events that I did with my husband. It’s nice to remember those times.
One thing that I was really proud of was my idea of the candy suckers. I made those out of pool noodles, colored tape and pvc piping. In retrospect, I probably should cut the pipes down a bit. I do recall thinking about it, but ultimately must have decided that the height had more impact.
We made a little coloring station, and adorned it with “hard candy” which of course were made again with balloons and cellophane.

This candy decor was extended to the gift table

While the kiddos were outside they enjoyed hoola hoops, jump rope, the trampoline, popsicles, little hugs and bubbles. Chris grilled so that everyone was able to eat more than just snacky food.

To end the day of fun we sent the kiddos home with suckers! And what kind of parents would we be if we didn’t recognize that we did provide candy to other peoples kids. So, I also included a toothbrush and toothpaste.

I absolutely love looking back at these special moments. We’re living a whole different world now with him gone.

This was a fun 5th birthday that our bright ‘sweet’ girl really enjoyed. We all enjoyed it!
