This is certainly a blast from the past. Sometimes I have moments when I just want to go back. Whenever I see little families together especially when they are families with little kiddos, I’m reminded of my life with Chris. During these times I go seeking those moments. When we were planning our family we said that we’d have a 1st birthday party, a 5th, and then we just didn’t know. I’m fortunate that he was here for each girls 1st and 5th, and of course every fun birthday celebrated in between.
This post won’t’ show everything, but I will show some of the details that we had fun DIYing together. Before our girls were born I knew that I would want the first party to be Cute As A Button. I also knew I would want the second to be Sweet As Pie. I had no idea of what the execution of these parties would be, but we eventually figured it out enough. Mind you, I had stopped my prior blog after having Em. So, I wasn’t thinking about photo quality overall, I was just capturing the moments. So forgive the “not so Pinterest perfect” 1st birthday party pictures.
Cute As A Button Themed Birthday Party

Coming up with the decor was pretty fun. I made the smash cake, candy button shaped suckers and button shaped snicker doodle cookies, as well as the cupcakes on the plate. I made buttons using different color paper plates with four little black circle stickers in the center. I’m a bit surprised that I didn’t take close ups of those items. Then again maybe I did, they might be on an external hard drive somewhere.

Chris made the birthday board. It was nice seeing several of her highlights that led to her first birthday.

Pomander balls. These were a fun colorful decorative element. I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased a variety of ribbon, a couple of dowels, buttons, and styrofoam balls. You simply cut small pieces of ribbon, fold them and stick them into the foam ball using a straight pin, in various places. I spray painted two old flower pots and affixed buttons on them and stuck the dowels into two additional pieces of foam to keep them standing upright.

We took a photo if Em every week, just to closely monitor subtle changes. I’m so glad we thought about this! We also captured her monthly in the same chair and swapped out our frames that hang on our 20ft. living room wall with her pics for her party. We had to add three extra frames to capture all 12 months.

Since Em was just a baby but had older cousins, we purchased some fun items for them to play with outside so that they wouldn’t be bored only having access to baby toys.

Prior to her party we scheduled a photo session. Here are a couple of the pics. Chris designed her onesy, I made her tutu and bow.

The firsts of life are so exciting!!! We had such a great time planning these days. So grateful for the memories that still feel very present.
