My linen closet has certainly gone through changes over the years. It’s always been a bit frustrating to deal with. I am grateful to have it, but it is such a tiny space that I’ve struggled to be able to use it efficiently. I can say that I did organize it once, only to soon realize that even though things are put in bins, it doesn’t make it any more user-friendly if the bins are just full of the stuff you’re trying to keep out of site. Because at that point the bins are also unorganized.
It’s always fascinating to me how unless you live in the house you have no idea what’s lurking behind a closet door. What’s more shameful is that I think that I’m naturally an organized person, yet it’s so easy with the hustle and bustle of life to get off of my game and just ‘toss this there’ and ‘lay that here’ just to get out of the door. I continue to teach my girls to just handle it once. If you put it in the right place the first time you won’t have to do it again. I do recognize that it’s easy to teach it, just not always convenient to execute it. I need to give them grace in that as well.
Here’s a pic of my linen closet. Doesn’t it look so pristine and clean? You might think the inside is going to be just a few home essentials that are needed daily or even on occassion. It can’t possibly be too bad right? Well, it certainly can.

Linen Closet Chaos
****DON’T LOOK TOO CLOSELY**** I am literally lowering my head in shame!!

Yep, Somehow all of this STUFF fits in this super tiny closet. Execution=NOT Well. And I’m even a little embarrassed that I’m actually putting this out there. Transparency at it’s finest I guess. But let’s be clear, it’s not only me making this area the wreck that it is… it’s just mainly me, because lets be honest, there’s nobody else here to fix it anymore. This is not because I’m unorganized, but sometimes it’s just hard to keep up. I always have a plan in mind though. It’s just a matter of finding the time. As we all know life can get pretty chaotic and things can get out of hand quickly. Then let exhaustion set in, and it’s a wrap!
Those grayish baskets were an attempt earlier on in life to be more organized. They soon became filled with items that had to continually be parsed through. This closet was literally holding everything! The towels always seemed to be stuffed inside, 3 space heaters, a ton of hair supplies, tub cleaners, first aid supplies, throw pillows that get cycled throughout the seasons. Just a bunch of stuff.
The bottom of this closet was kind of a catch all. Anything that went in that space just toppled over onto the next thing or sat on top of another thing, and when I had something in my hand that didn’t quite have a home, it would unfortunately get tossed into that space.
Needless to say, this whole situation stressed me every time I had to face it. And as you might have read here, I highly dislike the wired shelves. Things easily fall off of them or tilt within them which just made this horrible situation even worse.
Soooooo operation get it together has to go into effect. First, everything needed to come out

Transforming The Linen Closet
Once it was all empty I painted the door
I also created shelves to cover the Rubbermaid wire shelving
I added the peel and stick liner to the backs of the linen closet just to give it a little more aesthetic appeal.
The shelves were completed and ready to be added to the closet!

Can I just say that even this much of a change is making a major difference! Next I had to tackle all of the things that were in the linen closet. I purchased these clear container so that we could actually see what we are looking for

And this was such a cute and convenient container to house wash cloths and hand towels
Once I got everything into their new containers, I added a small drawer to prevent the bottom of the closet from becoming a catch all.

And after adding a hanging organizer that literally holds a ton of stuff, I was all finished!!

I later swapped out the boring white knobs for these cute black rings.

Done and done!

And yes this last picture isn’t the prettiest after photo once everything is actually put in the spaces, but recognize the purpose of this makeover…THERE IS NOW A HOME FOR ALL THE THINGS”!!!
